Volume Leveling
Volume Leveling allows Tracks to be played back at a consistent volume level,
so that you don't have to manually adjust the volume to compensate for some
Tracks being recorded at higher/lower volumes than others. Volume leveling
can be done in one of 2 ways:
- By leveling the playback volume of a file as it plays
in MediaMonkey based on a volume leveling coefficient that is pre-analyzed.
This approach involves no modifications to the audio file other than a tag
update, however, the benefits of volume leveling will be limited primarily to
users of MediaMonkey.
- By leveling the track volume of the source file so that it plays back at
level volume on any player. This approach involves modifications to the audio
file's volume attributes without any effect on the quality of the file, however,
it is impossible to undo a 'Level Volume' operation, and it can be done only
with MP3 files.
Note: MediaMonkey follows the Replay Gain standard approach to volume
leveling, a comprehensive approach that does not impact audio fidelity. The
implementation automatically prevents the clicks that sometimes occur
from audio normalization. For more information, see the Replay Gain Standard (by
David Robinson).
Leveling Playback Volume
- Select all of your Tracks and click Tools > Analyze
Volume. This will take some time as each Track will be individually
analyzed, and a volume adjustment coefficient will be calculated for each
Track. To minimize this time, ensure that Volume Leveling analysis only occurs
when no coefficient exists. See Volume
Leveling Configuration for details.
- From the Play menu, click Level Volume
. This will ensure that the Player will adjust the volume level using
the calculated coefficient. Note that Volume leveling is only supported for
the MediaMonkey player--it is not supported in Winamp.
Leveling Track Volume
To level the volume of Tracks already in the library:
- Configure the Baseline Volume Level to the desired volume via the Volume
Leveling Configuration panel.
- Select all of the Tracks you wish to level and click Tools
> Level Track Volume. This will take some time as
each Track will be individually analyzed, and the volume will then be adjusted
so that the Track(s) can play back levelled on any player.
To level the volume of Tracks when Burning a CD, Ripping a CD, or converting
between audio formats, simply enable the checkbox on the respective dialogs.
